There is nothing I enjoy more than cooking, whether it involves creating delicious meals chock full of exotic ingredients or whipping up quick but healthy two ingredient meals when the situation calls for it. As a mother of two lovely but extremely active little girls, I find that cooking allows me the chance to unwind after a hard day, in addition to providing me with the opportunity to put my creativity to work while preparing healthy meals for my family.
I have loved cooking since my mom first showed me how to break an egg into a bowl and reduce instances where I watched in horror as the fragile orbs splattered messily onto the kitchen floor. I have come a long way since learning how to prepare sunny side up eggs and can even claim bragging rights as one mean baking fiend, and my specialty, butterscotch pound cake has been known to cause a mini stampede at family events.

Of course, my cooking skills did not arise overnight, and I have spent many an evening poring over cookbooks, tossing burnt offerings into the garbage and gradually learning how to prepare mouth-watering dishes that are healthy to boot. Once in a while, though, I like to indulge my sweet tooth and create decadent treats from my favorite cookbook, How to Be a Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking.
While many people would prefer the more popular Martha Stewart’s Baking Handbook or Betty Crocker’s Best of Baking, which are exemplary offerings in and of themselves, I prefer Nigella’s cookbook with its down to earth tone and unwillingness to skimp on ingredients like sugar, chocolate, and butter. While the book is targeted towards an English audience, most of the ingredients and equipment needed can be easily found at your local grocery shop or online store.
All the recipes in this book are designed to comfort and delight your palate, while leaving you with room for error and experimentation. Full of high-quality photographs of mouth-watering creations along with detailed recipes and instructions, this is a cookbook that I find myself turning to time and again whenever I am in need of a sweet treat. Because it concentrates mainly on desserts, this is not a book to take out every other day, unless you are in a race against time to become the owner of a Guinness Book of World Records-worthy girth.
For occasional indulgences however, Domestic Goddess is the perfect manual for baking rich creations such as Burnt Butter Cupcakes, Dense Chocolate Loaf Cake and the immensely popular Banana Bread. Fans of savory baked goods are not left out either, and making Nigella’s Rustic Pizza gives me a good reason to break out my .
- 4.4 oz unsalted butter cubed
- 2 tbsp ice water
- 2 gg yolks
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp caster sugar
- 4 oz plain flour
- 1.8 oz pure pork sausage
- 1.8 oz smoked provolone
- 8.8 oz ricotta cheese
- 4.4 oz mozzarella
- 1.8 oz grated parmesan cheese
- 3.5 oz chopped prosciutto
- 3.5 oz chopped mortadella
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- A clove garlic crushed
- 2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley
- 2 pinches chili powder
- 2 eggs lightly beaten
- Black pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp breadcrumbs
- 2 tbsp milk
- 1 egg yolk
- Pich of salt
Make the pizza dough in the usual way (you can follow the instructions here)
Divide the dough into two discs, one larger than the other, wrap them in cling film and place in the refrigerator to rest.
Place a baking sheet in the oven and preheat it to 400º F.
Fry the sausage in olive oil and set aside to cool. Add all the other ingredients except the breadcrumbs and mix thoroughly.
Roll the larger dough piece over a 9-inch spring form tin, leaving a few inches overlap. Sprinkle breadcrumbs over the pastry lined tin, add the filling and cover with the rolled out smaller piece. Turn the edges of the overhand over to form a border.
Glaze the top of the pie with the milk, salt and egg mixture and stab with a fork to create steam holes. Place on the baking sheet and bake at 400ºF for ten minutes, then turn down the heat and cook at 350ºF for 45 minutes.
Take pizza out of the oven and allow to cool for up to 25 minutes before serving. Makes 8-10 servings. Nigella Lawson’s How to Become a Domestic Goddess’ cookbook is a great way for beginners to learn how to bake basic treats, as well as for veterans to polish up on their skill while creating delicious and decadent baked goods.
