A while back, things got craaaazy around here. In addition to having a client on a hard deadline who thinks I can do 45 hours of work in 10 (thank you for the vote of confidence, but….), Mr B. and I had to move my 86-year old mom into a new “retirement community,” which was a huge job because my mom doesn’t get rid of anything! So after working all day one Saturday moving mom, we decided to grab a late dinner out on the way home, which brings me to the best part of being too tired and hungry to care. Because as a result, we stumbled into a fantastic little new-to-us hole-in-the wall in SE Portland. We had intended to go to the more trendy place across the street – Pok Pok – but it was too busy and too pricey, so we strolled across the street and into the front door of Appethaizing Thai Cuisine, now destined to become one of our favorite eating destinations.
Appethaizing Thai Cuisine
3207 SE Division Street, Portland, Oregon
One Word: รสชาติแสนอร่อย
(Which, according to freetranslation.com, is Thai for “Delicious”!!)
We had the Massamam Curry, and I just don’t have enough great things to say about it. The potatoes were perfect! Perfect! Not overcooked and mushy like so many curries, but al dente, with lovely little ridges to hold the mouth-watering, sweet-hot sauce. And equally well-cooked carrots, broccoli, and onions – all swimming in a silky pool of creamy, coconutty goodness. We ordered ours “medium hot,” and we both left saying that it was absolutely the exact level of heat we crave – hot enough to make you sit up and take notice but not so hot that it hurts to eat. We also had the chicken satay, which wasn’t quite as stellar: it wasn’t bad at all – just not up to the bar set by that fantastic curry. We loved the cozy atmosphere, too – we counted seats and it looks like at capacity the place would hold about twenty-five. The service was very friendly and the food arrived piping hot, with very little delay. Portions were generous, and the prices were very reasonable. One order of curry and an appetizer for the two of us filled us up just right!
