Check out our collection of fun, easy April Fools' Day food pranks, along with insights from a seasoned expert in the art of April Foolery.
My BFF Cheryl is the best April Fooler I know. (Also the best gift-giver, but that's another post.) She absolutely delights in fooling her kids, and now grandkids, with her creative, playful pranks. During our Young Mom years, Cheryl and I lived just three doors apart, and I always waited expectantly each April 1st to learn what grand scheme she had devised that year to hoodwink her kids.
With that in mind, it only made sense to reach out to Cheryl when I decided to create a post about April Fools Day Food Pranks. Personally, I'm not much of a prankster, and I wanted to know what inspired and motivated her.
"Life can be hard! It can be filled with disappointment and challenges. It is often difficult to see the sun through the clouds. I think our days should include more smiles, humor, laughs and sometimes downright silliness. I love April Fool's Day for that reason. I love the excuse to provide a good joke; not one with malicious or hurtful intent, but it to provide levity - for everyone involved.
"Hanging the family breakfast on a tree or having hamburgers for breakfast - that's just pure goofy! A good April Fool's Day prank can provide an uplifting start to what otherwise could be a dreaded day. Laughing together creates a bond. It helps us remember that we are in this together, and we can make it through. That's what it is all about!
"Some may approach April Fool's Day with hesitation or misgiving; however, if pranks are done in the spirit of good-natured, harmless mischief, it can be transformed into a day of truly memorable fun!
"Think: What silly thing can you do that can create a genuine roll-the-eyes smile?"
~ Cheryl, Queen of the April Foolers
If you're wondering what all Cheryl's foolery looks like from the other side of the fence, here's what her kids have to say.
One of my favorite April Fool's Days happened on a Saturday when I was about ten. Generally, I would wake up to my Dad singing to me and tickling my feet, but not this day. And when I wandered into my parents' room, they were still in bed! I tried talking to them, and they responded "Just a little longer, Mom?", and "I'm so tired, I don't want to get up." They sounded just like me! I thought it was so clever that they had tried to swap roles with me...and I'd also gotten to sleep in that day.

One thing I always respected about my mom's pranks is they were funny, but they were never intended to hurt or humiliate anyone. Mom always had boundaries about how far she would go.
I remember one prank in particular, back when Krista was a teen, and I was probably about ten. We woke up April Fool's morning and we noticed that Mom hadn't made us any breakfast as she usually did. When we asked about it, she told us to go pick our breakfast off the tree in the front yard. That's when we discovered that Mom had gotten up early and tied fruit, little boxes of cereal, pop tarts, and juice boxes to the tree in our front yard!
At the time, we might have felt a bit embarrassed, but we weren’t hurt or resentful over it. Those April Fool's pranks are some of the experiences with my mom I will never forget.

We always knew my mom was going to pull something for April Fool's Day, so we would wake up a little on edge just watching throughout the day. One of my favorite years was when, after waiting all day for the hammer to drop, we sat down to dinner. Mom said we were having meatloaf and gravy, but on first sight we knew it wasn't: it was all treats but disguised as dinner! Even though the trick didn't really fool us, it made us smile. The point of all my mom's April Fool's tricks were all just to make us smile - and she did.

I think the key takeaway from what Cheryl and her children shared is to keep in mind that the best pranks are those that leave everyone smiling and feeling good. It's about creating moments of laughter and happiness.
